The Latest Berkeley Bromide
Nov0
Worried that the nation’s social scientists are focusing too intently on humanity’s negative impulses, the University of California at Berkeley is opening the Center for the Development of Peace and Well-Being, reported the New York Times.
Nicknamed the “joy center,” the new program will encourage academics on the campus to explore “peace, love, and well-being.” Said one Berkeley professor, “In a frantic fragmented world, we need to understand how people move from anxiety and fright to overcome adversity and achieve peace.”
Other planned topics of exploration include “well-being and the overscheduling of children,” “self-esteem across the life course,” “love in Latino couples,” “tradition and healing in the Canadian Inuit,” and “support groups and the experience of breast cancer.”
